What does Mysore Practice Sound Like?
Yotam Agam, producer, musician and Mysore practitioner in the Shala explores the use of Sound Scapes to support focus and concentration during Mysore practice. Collaborating with Kia and Mysore Yoga Paris he has also created a track using recordings of the actual sounds in the Shala during practice. We asked him what Mysore practice sound like..?
What does Mysore practice sound like?
A collection of rhythmic drones, a thread of thoughts wrapped in lush sounds and disturbing frequencies. A breathing soundtrack of meditation, that sounds like a womb.
What are your thoughts around supporting practice with live sound scapes?
I always have mixed feelings about this… Being a self-practice student for many years I do appreciate the silence, but at times sound can support your movements, your line of thoughts. It can act as a reminder to stay present. If you stay open and aware, you can find new dimensions in your practice.
I try to stay in the centre of the room with the music to support the centre of energy that the practitioners create. Balancing and observing that energy is challenging for me, and I find it fascinating to travel in the room with sounds and try to touch people trough my music.
Tell us about your MY{P} Track…
The moment I stepped into the Shala I was blown away by the sounds of the breath mixed with gentle adjustments and conversations. When I got the permission to record, I started listening to the sounds and realised that the music is a reflection of what happens on the mat. From the challenges, the judgments, the satisfactions and the connect and disconnect which is always there. I started laying sounds trying to communicate how my mind feels when I practice. This is how the track was born, a collection of thoughts, an invitation to sneak peak into our minds as yoga students.
